Clock Tower, Lucknow

The Clock Tower, officially known as the Husainabad Clock Tower, is one of the most prominent landmarks of Lucknow. Built in 1881 during the British era, the tower was constructed to welcome Sir George Couper, the first Lieutenant Governor of the United Provinces. Standing at approximately 221 feet, it is one of the tallest clock towers in India and dominates the skyline of the historic Husainabad area.

Architecturally, the Clock Tower reflects a strong Victorian and Gothic influence, inspired by London’s Big Ben. Its hexagonal structure, ornate carvings, and large clock faces showcase the craftsmanship of the colonial period. Unlike modern clock towers, it originally did not have an electric connection; the clock was manually operated using a pendulum system, highlighting the engineering skills of the time.

Located near iconic monuments such as Bara Imambara and Rumi Darwaza, the Clock Tower forms an important part of Lucknow’s heritage circuit. Though the clock mechanism is no longer functional, the tower remains a powerful visual symbol of the city’s colonial past.
