Rumi Gate, popularly known as Rumi Darwaza, is one of Lucknow’s most iconic historical landmarks and a symbol of the city’s rich Nawabi heritage. Built in 1784 during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, this imposing gateway stands about 60 feet tall and marks the entrance to old Lucknow’s historic precincts.
Modeled after the Sublime Porte (Bab-i-Humayun) in Istanbul, Turkey, Rumi Darwaza reflects a unique blend of Awadhi, Mughal, and Turkish architectural styles. Crafted from thin burnt bricks and lime mortar, it features an elegantly detailed arch adorned with exquisite floral motifs, ornamental carvings, and a distinctive umbrella-shaped chhatri at the top.
The gateway was constructed not just as a grand visual statement but also as part of a famine-relief initiative, providing employment and sustenance to artisans and labourers during a difficult period in the region’s history.
Today, Rumi Gate is a must-visit heritage attraction in Lucknow. Located adjacent to the Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara, it draws visitors from across India and the world to admire its architectural brilliance and historical significance.
